I made this design for the first time (but with a drop of Baltic amber) as my mother was losing her battle with cancer. It was the last design of mine that I was able to show her before she passed, before I fell down, down, down into the underworld. It feels fitting that this garnet version is the first piece I created for this chapter of my Descent of Persephone Collection.

As I crafted this jewel, I held in my heart the upward energy of ascent, of Persephone’s Rising, of a simultaneous closing of one cycle and opening of another, of a resurrection in springtime, in Aries season, my season. The Irish words “Éirigh suas anois” (“Rise up now”), rang in my ears, words I discovered in the pages of a book I read at one of the deepest points of my grief, words spoken by the narrator in desperation as she begged her deceased loved one to return. I turned these words on myself. Rise up now. It’s time.

This sterling silver statement necklace represents a rebirth, a return, a transmutation. One of the most opulent garnets I’ve ever worked with sparkles between two entirely handcrafted stems of lily of the valley. This jewel is intended to serve the wearer as a reminder of her inherent strength and capabilities. May it be a shield in the darkness and a guide toward the light, a companion on the winding road through the shadows and back to oneself. This piece measures 18” long and has been blackened and polished to highlight the details. My maker's mark and .925 for sterling adorn the back.
