“Old myths, old gods, old heroes have never died. They are only sleeping at the bottom of our mind, waiting for our call.” - Stanley Kunitz

It was in September, as I sat at Hag’s Head on the Cliffs of Moher by the coastal village in Ireland where my family originated, that I felt the Cailleach’s call to once again create pieces in homage to her. Something inside me was awakened by this reunion with my ancestral homeland, by seeing the formation in the cliffs named for a deity that I’ve always felt connected to. This armor-like necklace is an ode to the Celtic winter crone goddess, the mother of all the tribes of Ireland: the Cailleach. This design is meant to channel the fierce strength and ancient magic for which the Cailleach is known. As both creator and destroyer, she is said to have sculpted parts of the very landscape of Ireland {hence many spots being named for her, like Hag’s Head}, and each winter freezes that same landscape with her magic staff. A moonstone sits in the center of this necklace, a stone of the divine feminine which glows blue, like the Cailleach’s skin, and is full of white fissures which echo her frosty branch-like hair. The stone is surrounded by bare branches cast in sterling silver. Flowing Celtic knots tie in the cycle of life and death and the threefold aspect of the goddess, while moonstone crescents punctuate each end of this piece and nod to a triple moon formation. This one of a kind statement piece curves slightly to accommodate the shape of the chest, and is 18 inches in total length, with the pendant itself being 4 inches wide. This piece has been darkened and selectively polished to highlight the details, and to create the air of an ancient jewel unearthed from the frozen land.
