Often what first comes to mind about thistle is its prickly nature and status as a weed. But what of its medicine? For thousands of years, thistle has been used to treat a variety of conditions. As far back as the Ancient Greeks, herbal tonics of thistle were prescribed to improve liver health. The Greek botanist, physician, and Father of Pharmacology, Dioscorides, recommended thistle to cure any who have been poisoned, and said that if a thistle remedy was drunken in time, it could even cure the plague. Two thousand years ago, Latin-language prose writer Apuleius, wrote of carrying thistle as an amulet to “avert all ills”. Thistle also appears in Indigenous North American healing practices, to soothe a variety of skin conditions, gallstones, and jaundice. In the Medieval period, thistle-infused water was listed as an antidote for all poisons, similar to the idea we see from Dioscorides ages before in Greece. I’ve even heard mention of a tea of thistles being used as a historic treatment for depression in Scotland, although I’ve found no reliable reports of this practice. In modern times, research is constantly underway to examine thistle’s apparent potent antioxidant effects, its positive impact on platelet function, and its ability to protect the liver from damage due to toxins like alcohol or hepatitis. It is even a known treatment for amanita mushroom poisoning! {More on that later.} Many of the benefits of thistle lie in its ability to physically protect our cells from damage, a role that is perhaps reflected in the guarded, thorny nature that so many deem a nuisance. This piece is a thank you to thistle, an ode to its many medicinal purposes that are often overlooked, and a reminder that nothing is one-dimensional. Three natural rose cut amethysts sit between sterling flourishes. These stones boast a variety of shades depending on the lighting and angle. Suspended from the stone setting is a handmade apothecary jar with thistle inside. The chain is adjustable from 17 to 19 inches, for the wearer to find the ideal placement just below the collarbone. My maker's mark and .925 for sterling adorn the back of the pendant, and the entire piece has been blackened and polished for the appearance of a recently unearthed ancient relic.
