“The lily of the vale, of flowers the queen.”

In the Victorian era, it was a popular practice to “force” lily of the valley, or to grow them indoors outside of their usual growing season. Typically, this was done around Christmas and New Year, to bring cheer and merriment to the home during the cold and dark winter days, and to remind people that warmth and light always returns. The Victorians popularized floral symbolism through their elaborate language of flowers, dried flower art, and floral decor, and lily of the valley was a favorite of the era. As an ode to this history, I’ve created this adornment for the home using a Victorian resin frame I found in an antique shop. As an antique, this frame has some imperfections, but it is simply aging and nothing to do with the functionality. Within the frame, a stem of lily of the valley rests upon luxurious green velvet. I foraged this flower myself in the spring, from the woods near my home where they grow in lush carpets, and then pressed and preserved it. The frame is able to hang from a hook on the back. Due to the shimmering appearance of velvet, this olive green material changes from darker to lighter and warmer to cooler, depending on the viewing angle and current lighting. These are meant as talismans for your home, to serve as daily sources of happiness and inspiration, and as reminders to protect your heart.
