A Shield of Poppies

It is said that in the underworld, Persephone had a garden of eternally blooming poppies. I often wonder if she found comfort in tending to them on her darkest days, and then rose from the underworld, with armor forged in its shadows. This handcrafted shield, weathered and battle-worn, features a natural faceted garnet that is ever-reminiscent of the pomegranate seeds that sealed Persephone’s fate. Poppies bloom around it, the medicine enclosing the wound. Above this scene, a crescent moon reminds us that just as each moon phase has its own unique purpose and power, we must grant to each experience its importance and beauty. I crafted this piece as an ode to gardens tended in the darkness, to all the growth we may not see because it happens in the shadows, and above all, to the fortitude of the human spirit.
