Irish fairy lore tells my favorite origin story for lily of the valley: one evening, in ancient times, five young fairy sisters were sent out with white teacups to collect dew for the fairy queen’s breakfast. Prone to distraction, as children are, the sisters hung their cups on a nearby blade of grass so that they could frolic and dance together in the moonlight. They lost all track of time, and before they knew it, the sun was about to rise. In a hurry to return to the fairy kingdom before dawn, they tried to grab their cups, but each one had become stuck to the blade of grass. Knowing they’d be in great trouble, the fairy sisters panicked, but their fairy godmother showed up to hide their mistake. She conjured two large green leaves to hide the teacups, which turned into five perfectly spaced white flowers. Each spring this flower would grow back again, and the fairy sisters would return to the spot to play. Inspired by this fantastical tale, I created a teacup from a handmade lily of the valley flower. Inside sits a circle of natural and rare vesuvianite, like magical tea. This arrangement also echoes lily of the valley berries, which grow inside each flower and are green before turning bright red.  A tag with my maker's mark and .925 for sterling hangs from the clasp portion of the chain, and the entire piece has been blackened and sanded to highlight the details and heighten the magic.
