Each May, lily of the valley coats gardens and forest floors in sprawling carpets of fragrant white bells. This otherworldly flower is a harbinger of spring, but did you know it has connections to winter as well? In the Victorian era, it was common practice to “force” {aka grow indoors in pots, outside of its natural growing season} lily of the valley at Christmas time. This was possible because despite its delicate appearance, lily of the valley is a particularly hardy plant that fights to flourish even in less-than-ideal conditions. This seasonal ritual was meant to bring joy into the home during the darkest and coldest days of the year, to serve as a reminder that eventually light and abundance will return. In the language of flowers, lily of the valley represents a return to happiness, especially after a struggle for it, and this association goes hand in hand with the intentions behind this forgotten Victorian practice. Inspired by this olde way of winter, I created this symbolic talisman. A bowing arch of lily of the valley, constructed entirely by hand from sterling silver sheet and wire, crowns an icy quartz crystal. Abundance above and winter below, this formation reminds us that the dark days are not only connected to but required for the light. This piece hangs from a 16 inch sterling chain, and is meant to serve the wearer as a source of personal power and a guide back to oneself.
