Descent of Persephone Earrings - Descent of Persephone Collection, Vol. V
*AS ANNOUNCED ON MY IG, ALL ORDERS FROM THIS COLLECTION WILL SHIP TUESDAY 10/15.*
At the Autumn Equinox, the time of year that inspired these earrings, I am reminded of the myth of Persephone, who while out gathering flowers with her mother Demeter, was kidnapped by Hades and imprisoned in the underworld. A distraught Demeter abandoned her duties as goddess of the grain and harvest, so the crops withered horribly in Persephone's absence. Ultimately, Demeter begged Zeus to intervene, who decided that since Persephone had eaten some pomegranate seeds while in the underworld, there she must spend a third of each year. The Autumn Equinox marks Persephone's annual return to the underworld, and the beginning of the more barren months caused by Demeter's heartbreak. Two rare specimens of fiery petrified palm root wood capture the essence of the underworld, while juicy garnets set in 14k gold filled evoke the pomegranate seeds that sealed Persephone's fate. 14k gold filled crescent moons flank the garnets, echoing a triple moon and recalling the seasonal cycles of life and death, waxing and waning. My maker's mark and .925 for sterling adorn the back of each earring, and they have been given a matte finish to echo the mood of the myth.
-- Details -- Sterling silver. Natural garnets. Natural petrified palm root. Earrings measure just shy of 3 1/2 inches from top of hook to the bottom of the setting. A single earring weighs .72 ounces, about the weight of four U.S. quarters. You will receive the pictured pair of earrings.
