Descent of Persephone Cuff
This handcrafted cuff is meant to evoke the myth of Persephone, who while out gathering flowers with her mother Demeter, was kidnapped by Hades and imprisoned in the underworld. Demeter, who was completely distraught by the taking of her daughter, abandoned her duties as goddess of the grain and harvest, so the crops withered horribly in return. Ultimately, Demeter begged Zeus to intervene, and he declared that since Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds in the underworld, there she must spend that many months of each year. The ancient Greeks explained the changing seasons with this myth, and believed that Persephone‘s descent and Demeter’s subsequent grief brought fall and winter each year, while Persephone’s return ushered in spring and summer. In this cuff, three high grade petrified palm root specimens capture the essence of the underworld. Their flamelike patterns rise and fall from one side to the other, much like life’s waves of hardship, grief, joy, and abundance. These are some of the best examples of this increasingly rare material in my stone collection, and I’m ecstatic to finally share them with you all! Sterling crescent moons float at each end of the palm root trio, which nod to the seasonal cycles of life and death, waxing and waning, and the divine feminine. Sparkling rose cut garnets punctuate each end of the cuff, nestled within solid 14k gold settings. These gems represent the seeds that sealed Persephone’s fate, which tethered her to the ultimate darkness and yet allowed her to find her power. This armor-like cuff measures 5 1/2 inches plus a 1 inch gap, and it is slightly adjustable. I consider this a size S/M, but to be sure of fit, please measure your wrist in the spot where you like to wear cuffs. My maker’s mark and .925 for sterling adorn the underside of the main stone setting, and the entire piece has been blackened and polished to echo the mood of the myth.
