Thistle Shield Pendant ✦ 18 Inches ✦ The Thistle Armory Collection
Sharp things make for excellent armor. Thistle certainly exemplifies this rule, but its potency as a protective charm goes much deeper than its prickly nature. As I dug into this plant’s history in recent months, I uncovered a tale of survival against all odds. Some types of thistle are said to have traveled to Australia, the U.S., and other corners of the world via the thistledown mattresses of Scottish migrants. Eventually, mattresses were disposed of, seeds were accidentally released, and thistle spread like wildfire. Just as quickly as this tenacious plant proliferated, anti-thistle laws were passed. Thistle-eradication efforts were especially vigorous in Australia, where thistle’s hard-to-remove spikes were supposedly harming the quality of valuable exported wool. Thistle Prevention Acts were written into local legislations, with “Thistle Inspectors” appointed to comb the countryside and fine landowners who failed to remove even one thistle from their property. Various councils, determined to remove this plant completely, allocated funds to cut down and burn all the thistles they could find, and pamphlets on identification and removal were distributed to the people. Landlords and farmers were brought into court to answer for their crimes of allowing thistle to grow on their lands. Yet, in the face of the most extreme measures taken to eradicate it, thistle defiantly grew on. It sunk strong and widespread root systems into the earth, outstretched its spikes to guard against harm, and its downy seeds rode the wind to propagate far and wide. It ensured its self-preservation. What better plant to serve as a protective talisman than the ultimate survivor? In this piece, two handmade thistle leaves flank a thick gem of natural amethyst, repelling unwanted energies and protecting the wearer always. A window cut from the back allows light to illuminate this incredible stone. This sterling silver talisman of endurance, protection, and self-growth has been blackened and sanded to highlight the details and heighten the magic. My maker's mark and .925 for sterling adorn the back.
