“Old myths, old gods, old heroes have never died. They are only sleeping at the bottom of our mind, waiting for our call.” - Stanley Kunitz

The cauldron is a place of transformation and abundance. A symbol of the womb, it is intrinsically linked to the divine feminine, the cycle of death and rebirth, and the act of creation. Celtic mythology tells us that the first cauldron was created in the oldest days, in the era of The Cailleach - the ancient Celtic crone and winter goddess. With all of these connections, I knew I wanted to feature some of my signature cauldron necklaces in the Age of the Cailleach Collection. This sterling piece is an entirely handmade hollow vessel. On the front of the cauldron stands a sterling corn dolly, holding a scythe and wheat, with a crescent moon floating above. This image was handmade from my own drawing and is a nod to an Irish folk practice tied to the Cailleach. As the Cailleach is said to emerge to rule the land once the last stalks of wheat have been harvested, it became common practice for the first farmer to finish their harvest to make a corn dolly from the very last stalks. This doll represented the Cailleach, and was also sometimes fittingly called the Hag of the Harvest. It would be passed from farmer to farmer as they finished their work for the season. The last farmer to finish their harvest would be the last to receive the doll, and would be tasked with caring for it through the winter months. How poorly or well they cared for the doll would be reflected in the crop yield of the following year, as the Cailleach would blight or bless them depending on their efforts. Seven natural warm colored smoky quartz points radiate from within the cauldron. My maker's mark and .925 for sterling adorn the back. This piece has been darkened and selectively polished to highlight the details, and to create the air of an ancient jewel unearthed from the frozen land.
